First time visitors for this park. Good campground location for area attractions. The campground itself offers a variety of sites and activities. The staff had an organized activities schedule. There was plenty of staff present through out the day. Quiet hours seemed to be enforced, or we were just lucky to have courteous neighbors. The pool area, bathrooms and other amenities seemed clean and well maintained. The WiFi worked well. As mentioned in another review, there were some trees but not on every site. The roads were a bit steep although that did not deter little kids on bikes. One of our dogs nearly was run down by a kid who couldn't steer or brake well enough coming downhill. We would use this campground again but on a less busy time of year.
As I type this, I am listening to the roar of traffic on I-40. The proximity to the interstate is helpful but also one of this campgrounds downfalls. Forget the feeling of being remote in the mountains. We had a pull thru site and while it was adequate, it did leave us wanting more. They are close together and have very little grassy area. We walked through the back-in and tent site area and we are glad we chose a pull thru. It looked as if there were some permanent residents as one site had privacy fencing and some other campers were up on blocks. I do appreciate the on site trash pickup by the staff. There are some short trails that make for pleasant, shady walks with the dogs. The pool area appears clean enough but we did not use it. The staff have been helpful with information for the surrounding area. We would use this campground again in a pinch.
If this was the only campground I had ever been to, I'd probably think it was acceptable but fortunately, I have a variety of places for comparison. The site we had was very challenging to get leveled on. The sites across the street from ours had drainage issues as there was ankle deep, standing water from recent rain. The electric posts were not conveniently located and no on site water was a major downer. There were an abundance of sites which also meant an abundance of noisy children, barking dogs, clothes lines, bikes, slow walking people that wouldn't get out of the way for oncoming traffic and just generally all the related crap. I was very irritated that you have to pay an additional park entrance fee. I would not stay at this location again unless it was an absolute necessity.
Found this campground to be efficient for our given purpose. If I was traveling and using this as a true vacation spot, I would have been disappointed. It's location is it's biggest downfall in my eyes. The campground is in the middle of a neighborhood. The area around it is growing so they are making the best of what they have. It's proximity to I-65 and other tourist attractions is OK. There seemed to be a decent variety of sites although they were improperly utilized. The site next to ours was an RV site which was overcrowded with three cars, three tents and way too many people given the "persons per site" limit. None seemed to be "policing" the activities as the people camped there were throwing their leftover food into the grass next to their site. I did think the sites were too close together. The pet playground was interesting and we did take our dogs into it. Some of the buildings looked like their exteriors could have used some remodeling/refreshing. There was a shortage of available trash cans. You had to carry your trash to the dumpsters at the main entrance. If I was camping in a tent I would have asked for my money back as most of the tent sites didn't look like there was any level place to pitch a tent.
The pictures on-line don't do the campground justice. I had some initial concerns based on previous reviews, but we were more than happy with our surroundings. We had a site that backed up to the tent camping area so we had ample room. Some of the loops looked a little tight though. Our biggest complaint was lack of available trash cans. There were the main dumpsters near the entrance and at the bathhouse but none in other places that we could find. Sometimes we had to walk farther with a doggy pick-up bag than we wanted. Considering that we were definitely in the off season, we found plenty of things to keep us busy. The campground was one of the quietest we've been in. Not sure what it's like in peak months? All in all, it was enjoyable and we look forward to future trips.
We have done repeat trips to this campground. It has some things working against it, but the quaintness of the whole park makes up for the campground. Some of the sites are very sloped and require lots of extra blocks. Some of the sites have trees in inconvenient locations that prevent your awning from being put out. The road noise and area business lights can be bothersome when trying to sleep. We will go back to this location but we have pre-scouted the best sites in relation to culverts, security lights, and trees. Sites 48 to 63 are pretty good in terms of distance from the highway.
I found this particular campground to be very pleasant. It was very quiet, and for most of our stay it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The sites were a little close together, but we managed to get in on the first try. It looked like there were improvements going on in some areas with new gravel. It is conveniently located off the interstate.
